Nature in Holland and Waterland
Make a trip to the beautiful peninsula Marken
If you want to enjoy the nature of Holland, a visit to Marken is a must! With a population of 1800 residents in a 3,7 square kilometre area, Marken is mostly unpopulated nature. Farmland, creeks and of course the lake. In spring and summer the peninsula is home to a wide variety of birds. Waders like the Godwit, Lapwing and Oystercatcher, but also to the Nile Goose, Heron, Spoonbill, Egret, Stork, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine Falcon, Kestrel and Buzzard. Occasionally a Sea Eagle, which are nesting in the nearby Oostvaardersplassen, will also fly across the water to visit Marken. In August and September there is a chance to spot an Osprey, when they are making a rest stop while they are traveling south ahead of the winter.
From the paths you have nice views with on one side the town of Marken, the farmlands with new born lambs, hares and a variety of colourful flowers and butterflies. On the other side you have the view of the outstretched IJsselmeer.
Marken is also worth a visit in winter. Especially when the lake is freezing, the coastline can be spectacular. The ice can build up and crawl over the dikes, a setting made for beautiful pictures.
A walk around Marken, including a visit to the “Horse of Marken” (the lighthouse) on the eastern point of the island, takes about 2 hours. You’ll save the costs of parking (€4,- per car plus €0,50 per person) if you take the ferry. You can take your bicycle on board with us. This way you can enjoy the nature from both the land, as well as from the water.
